Katya believes that every student develops differently.
Rather than teaching every student through the same standardized method or sequence of books, she creates an individual program based on the student’s age, current level, musical goals, technical needs and personality.
Her teaching is rooted in the Russian conservatory tradition in which she was trained from childhood.
Lessons emphasize:
Healthy and efficient technique
Bow control and tone production
Left-hand technique and intonation
Music reading
Rhythm and musical accuracy
Interpretation and phrasing
Classical repertoire
Independent musicianship
Orchestra and ensemble skills
For intermediate and advanced students, lessons may also include:
Youth orchestra preparation
All-State preparation
Seating auditions
Orchestral excerpts
Chamber music
College and conservatory auditions
Advanced viola and violin repertoire
Katya’s goal is not simply to help a student learn the next piece of music.
The long-term goal is to develop a musician who understands how to practice, how to listen, how to solve technical problems and how to make independent musical decisions.
Students are encouraged to understand the music they play rather than simply imitate a teacher.
This approach is particularly valuable for students who are ready to move beyond method-based instruction and begin developing a deeper level of technique, musicianship and artistic independence.
Katya works with:
Viola students
From developing players to advanced musicians seeking specialized viola instruction.
Violin students
Serious beginners through advanced students who want strong technical foundations and individualized training.
School and youth orchestra musicians
Students preparing for orchestra placement, seating auditions and more advanced ensembles.
All-State and audition candidates
Focused preparation for competitive auditions and orchestral repertoire.
College-bound musicians
Students preparing repertoire, auditions and advanced classical study.
Adult musicians
Adults returning to violin or viola, as well as experienced players seeking higher-level instruction.
